Background
Frosts Cold Storage operates temperature-controlled warehousing in Singapore, serving food manufacturers, importers, and distributors requiring reliable frozen storage. With space at a premium in Singapore and energy costs a critical operational concern, Frosts needed to modernize its facility to maximize storage density while reducing the cost per pallet position of cooling.
Challenge
Cold chain warehousing presents unique engineering challenges: automation equipment must function reliably at temperatures between -18°C and -25°C, and any inefficiency in space utilization directly increases the volume of refrigerated air that must be maintained — driving up energy costs. Manual fork truck operations in such environments also create safety and productivity challenges.
Frosts required a system that could handle 400+ SKUs, deliver consistent picking performance, and operate continuously in a demanding sub-zero environment within a 7.2m-height facility.
Solution
Rainbow Dynamics designed and deployed one of the first cold chain 4D Pallet Shuttle installations in Singapore, purpose-engineered for sustained operation at -18°C to -25°C. The system spans 4 levels within the 7.2m-height facility, with 12 shuttles and 4 lifts working in concert to maximize every cubic meter of refrigerated space.
By automating storage and retrieval, the system allows Frosts to minimize aisle space and dramatically increase pallet density — directly reducing the refrigerated volume that must be maintained and lowering energy consumption per pallet stored.
