Beyond Stacker Cranes: How 4-Way Shuttle Technology Is Redefining High-Density Storage

Had a great discussion with Tom Andersson and Adam Botterill at STIQ Ltd last week for their upcoming Pallet AS/RS report, together with my colleague Jaap Vos
Some points to share from our discussions:
1) 4-way shuttle is winning the next generation of pallet storage— not only taking share from stacker cranes, but also replacing traditional selective pallet racking where density becomes critical. The reason is simple: storage density and flexibility. Compared with conventional pallet racking, high-density shuttle solutions can often deliver 50%+ improvement in storage capacity, while offering a more scalable and redundant architecture than traditional automation approaches.
2) Mega projects are emerging, at a scale unheard of. We are seeing projects moving toward hundreds of thousands of pallet locations, with some designs approaching 600,000 pallet positions. At this scale, the advantages of modular robotic systems — scalability, redundancy, and the ability to adapt over time — become increasingly important.
3) For solution companies, Installed base is still a major differentiator today, but cost, software, and services will become the long-term battleground as the industry matures. Companies with handful of successful deployments have built significant trust with customers and system integrators. However, as 4-way shuttle technology becomes more widely adopted, the winners will be determined not only by hardware, but also by fleet management software, system intelligence, integration capability, deployment speed, and lifecycle support.
4) Cold storage AS/RS will be the next big thing. The business case is especially compelling because cold warehouses face a unique combination of challenges: high real estate costs, significant energy consumption, and harsh operating environments for people. In these environments, improving storage density, reducing manual operations, and increasing reliability create value far beyond simple labor savings.
